Head chef Mariana Brito hails from Tijuana, Mexico, where she attended the Escuela de Arte Culinario before training in Spain, New York, and South Carolina, under chefs of Michelin starred restaurants. Joining her global background with a passion for organic food and her strong relationships with local producers, Mariana centres the flavours of modern Mexican cuisine in the landscape of the Canadian prairie. Every ingredient is fresh, ethically sourced, and organic whenever possible.

Madison Sutcliffe

“It was in France at the age of 18, that Madison discovered the magic of hospitality-good food, drink and warm reception. She fell in love with the way that it connected complete strangers. She has since worked in restaurants in Winnipeg and Regina while pursuing her Sommelier via WSET and traveling frequently. Along with her passion for travel comes her passion for home! While she was raised in Winnipeg, Madison has called Regina home since 2010 and has brought everything she’s learned along.

To her, The Backyard IS that hospitality magic. It’s good food and good wine that feeds the body and the community, and It’s a tale as old as time.”

Cat Haines

Cook

Cat is a trans woman who recently moved home to Regina after four years of living in the Silicon Valley and working at tech startups. She came back to Saskatchewan with a new appreciation for the prairie landscape and a desire to live more ethically. Cat is at the very beginning of her culinary career, and excited for the opportunity of learning to cook with, and share, some of Saskatchewan’s best ingredients and food!

Kristina Hedlund

Front of the House

Kristina was born and raised in Regina. She spends half the year travelling, writing, and performing with the local band Rah Rah. She enjoys hiking, bicycling, canoeing, and climbing, as well as exploring the history and topography of Saskatchewan. Kristina is happy to support locally sourced and sustainable foods and innovative local businesses.

Justin Craigen

Back of House

Justin was born & raised in Weyburn. After a decade of questionable choices outside of Canada, he returned to Regina and began working under Chef Malcom Craig (Beer Bros) and Chef David Straub (Flip Eatery, Salt Food Boutique, & Malt City). Currently sous chef at Cathedral Social Hall, Justin will be putting his love of gardening & local ingredients and extensive charcuterie skills into The Backyard as often as he can.
